World Trust Distribution

The Australian Ethical World Trust has not paid a distribution for the six months to 31 December 2007, although the Trust did make a positive return (see your Periodic Statement enclosed). The World Trust’s return for this period consists solely of capital growth.

Equities portfolios tend to focus on capital growth as opposed to income generation. This situation is exaggerated in an international equities portfolio such as the World Trust. Australia's taxation regime is more concessional towards dividend payments by companies than most other countries around the world. This means that dividend rates (and hence the income component of portfolio returns) are generally lower - often much lower - in overseas countries than in Australia. Additionally the World Trust invests in many early-stage industries like wind and solar power. Companies in such industries tend to reinvest more of their profits back into the business than mature companies, which are more likely to pay out profits in dividends. This tends to push the balance of returns for the World Trust away from dividend income and in favour of capital growth.

Corrections to Annual Report

ASX announcement - including Annual Report (PDF file 2.0MB)
On 31 August 2007 Australian Ethical lodged its 2007 directors’ report and financial statements with the ASX. On 19 October 2007 Australian Ethical lodged its 2007 Annual Report with the ASX which included the directors’ report and financial statements. The company has since discovered that in several areas the directors’ report and financial statements included within the Annual Report were not consistent with those lodged on 31 August 2007 (which were correct).  This occurred because of errors and omissions in incorporating the 31 August 2007 material into the graphic design version of the Annual Report.

Subprime debt and market nervousness

Recent media reports have highlighted the risks facing global financial markets due to the poor lending practices of American subprime mortgage providers. Subprime mortgages are typically used by borrowers with poor credit history who are unable to access standard mortgage products with lower interest rates.

Australian Ethical fixed interest investments
Australian Ethical does not invest in any subprime mortgage debt in our fixed interest portfolio. We have no obvious exposure to ‘at risk’ issuers of subprime mortgages. Australian Ethical’s fixed interest portfolio is comprised predominantly of high quality credits, such as senior Australian bank debt and AAA mortgage-backed securities.

Australian Ethical equity (share) investments
Australian Ethical has always focused on quality companies. During market downturns, our portfolios have a history of relative out-performance compared with the broader market. We remain committed to investing in quality shares taking into account ethical, governance and financial strength. Equity markets are by their nature volatile, with periods of strong rises and sharp corrections. This is why people investing in equities are encouraged to take a long-term view (we recommend 5–7 years in our PDS). Recent market falls seem large when considered in isolation, but less so in the context of the preceding four consecutive years of double-digit returns. For investors looking at equity performance over a long period, even events such as the 1987 share market crash can ‘wash out’ and become a blip on the long-term chart.

The above does not take into account your objectives, financial situation or needs. You should consider these matters before making an investment decision. Consult a licensed financial adviser for advice on the most appropriate investment strategy for your circumstances.

End of financial year unit price changes

AEI distributes to the unitholders of each trust the income earned by the trusts each six months. In addition, normally taxable capital gains realised over the full financial year will be included with the distribution for the six months ending 30 June.

Your income is based on the number of units you hold at the distribution cut off date. For the current distribution the cut off date is 30 June 2006. This distribution is normally paid in the month of July.

Please note that there is a drop in unit price for each of the trusts from the close of business on 30 June or 31 December (cum price) to the next business day (ex price). This difference reflects the amount of the distribution to be paid to unitholders in cents per unit or cpu. The distribution amount is paid to each unitholder either through reinvestment in further units or via an EFT payment to a nominated bank account.

Final distribution for the trusts 2005-06 year

As at 30 April 2006 the position of our equities based trusts was similar to the previous financial year. We are conditionally anticipating an unusually large distribution which could be similar to last year. This distribution will most likely contain a high proportion of capital gains due to signifi cant trading profits, however trading conditions have recently altered and if this continues throughout the final month the distribution may be lower than last year. The distribution will be paid in the last week of July.
