Envestra owns some 17,500 kilometres of natural gas distribution networks and 1,110 kilometres of transmission pipelines, serving consumers in South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and the Northern Territory. The creation of Envestra was directly linked to federal government policy to introduce greater competition into the natural gas industry by splitting the retail function from the ownership and operation of the distribution networks.
