CSL Limited develops, manufactures and markets pharmaceutical products of biological origin. CSL was founded in 1916 as the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories, to meet the demand for locally produced biopharmaceuticals in a country isolated by war. CSL was the first to supply Australia's public with such life-saving products as insulin, penicillin and the polio vaccine. CSL Bioplasma has been the national fractionator for Australia since 1952 and has been a partner with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service (ARCBS) working closely with Federal and State Governments to meet the clinical demands of the Australian community.
