$6600 grant recipient: ACT Eden Monaro Cancer Support Group
Project: food vouchers for cancer sufferers and their families

The ACT Eden Monaro Cancer Support Group has been operating since 1986 and provides financial and emotional assistance to families who have a member undergoing treatment for cancer.

The grant will be used to provide food vouchers to families that cannot afford proper Christmas meals due to the disruption that the cancer disease has had on their lives.


$6600 grant recipient: Australian Marine Conservation Society
Project: removing marine debris from Moreton Bay Marine Park for the protection of threatened sea turtles

The Australian Marine Conservation Society is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that has been operating for over 40 years, working with local communities, government and industry to create marine national parks, save ocean wildlife and sustain coastal fisheries.

The grant will go towards the cleanup project at Moreton Bay Marine Park to remove debris such as fishing gear, and domestic and industrial rubbish, which threatens the survival of the endangered sea turtles.


$6600 grant recipient: Australians for Disability and Diversity Employment
Project: creating a national advocacy network for disadvantaged people and people with disabilities

Australians for Disability and Diversity Employment is a group of people with disabilities and from other disadvantaged groups, with a focus to increase employment opportunities for disabled and disadvantage individuals and create positive change in Australian employment.

A grant received in 2006 from Australian Ethical Investment was used to conduct a national disability employment forum that promoted disability employment advocacy and information sharing. This year’s grant will be used to further the forum into a national network, and will fund the development of an electronic database, the holding of bi-annual national meetings, and the establishment of a part-time national office.


$6600 grant recipient: Barefoot Economy
Project: establishing an organic agriculture training centre in Sri Lanka for poor rural communities

Barefoot Economy is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that assists poor communities in developing countries to establish viable, sustainable and ethical businesses.

The grant will go towards establishing a training centre at the Barefoot Economy Essential Oil Processing Plant in Sri Lanka to train rural people living under the poverty line in environmentally sustainable organic agriculture. The centre will also act as a national library and information resource centre for farmers.


$6600 grant recipient: Bicycle Federation of Australia
Project: establishing a workplace ‘bike fleets’ consultancy service

The Bicycle Federation of Australia (BFA) promotes the environmental, health, economic and social benefits of cycling, working closely with member and community groups and all tiers of government.

The grant will be used to develop a consultancy service to assist organisations in setting up workplace bike fleets, which offers to employers improved employee productivity, greater efficiency and transport cost savings. The grant will specifically fund market research, developing marketing tools for potential clients, and developing costings for different services.


$6600 grant recipient: Camp Quality
Project: establishing a 12 month pilot support program for newly diagnosed children with cancer and their families

Camp Quality is a non profit organisation that is committed to bringing hope and happiness to every child living with cancer, their families and communities through ongoing quality recreational, educational, hospital and financial support programs.

The grant will be used to establish a 12 month pilot program in New South Wales that links newly diagnosed children (0–15 years) with cancer and their families to families who have child survivors. This program will provide a mentoring, educational and support program to approximately 240 new cases each year throughout the state.


$6600 grant recipient: NRMA CareFlight
Project: employment and training program for registrars in ‘out of hospital’ emergency medicine

CareFlight was established in May 1986, and works in partnership with the New South Wales government, Ambulance Service of NSW and NRMA to provide rapid response critical care, particularly in remote suburban and regional country areas. It operates its emergency helicopter service from Sydney and Orange in the Central West.

The grant will specifically fund the employment and training of 11 senior registrars every six months in ‘out of hospital’ emergency medicine, in order to ensure that the registrars can operate effectively in the field outside a hospital environment.


$6600 grant recipient: Pedal Power ACT
Project: ACT 2008–09 budget campaign

Pedal Power was founded in 1975 as a non-profit community organisation, and currently has around 1700 members. It undertakes cycle advocacy and promotion, leads bike ride programs, and supports over 90 ride-to-work coordinators across Canberra.

The grant will be used to continue its advocacy work, particularly for its ACT 2008–09 budget campaign, which is a campaign that will focus on filling in the missing links in Canberra’s cycle path network. Funding will be used to employ a professional advocate to work with volunteer cycling advocates, as well as cover printing costs.


$6600 grant recipient: WaterAid Australia
Project: aid program of safe water, sanitation and hygiene education access in Timor – Leste

WaterAid Australia is an international charity dedicated to helping some of the world's poorest people escape the stranglehold of poverty and disease caused by living without safe water and sanitation.

The grant will be used to contribute to WaterAid Australia’s program in Timor – Leste to provide sustainable community-managed water and sanitation services and hygiene education to 980 people.


$6600 grant recipient: WIRES (NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service)
Project: Volunteer inoculation to care and handle flying foxes

WIRES is the largest wildlife rehabilitation organisation in Australia rescuing and rehabilitating sick, injured or orphaned native animals. It has a network of 2200 voluntary rescuers, carers and veterinarians across NSW in 30 branches.

The grant will be used to fund 30 vaccines to be administered to WIRES volunteers against the aids virus transmitted by the grey-headed flying fox, which will ensure the volunteers can safely handle these native animals.
